There are numerous books on this fascinating period of European history, some rich both in content and language. Yet the author feels that quite a few of them are either too scholarly or have been written in a language too difficult for an average student whose mother tongue is not English. This book meets the requirements of undergraduates in Indian universities. It attempts to present in broad outline the important events which have affected the course of modern European history and spread European civilization abroad. Further, an attempt has been made to bring out the interplay of social, economic and intellectual trends on the course of political events, and the impact of political forces on economic and social movements. Fifteen maps and ten genealogical tables have been included in this book. Starting from the beginning of the French Revolution, Raghubir Dayal guides the reader deftly through the mazes of modern European politics through the crisis of 1914-18 to that other watershed of European as of world history, the Second World War.1 INTRODUCTION: EUROPE N THE 18th CENTURY 2 THE INDUS REVOLUTION 3 CAUSLS OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION 4 THE COURSE OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION 5 WARS OF REVOLUTIONARY FRANCE 6 The RISE OF NAPOLEON AND HIS REFORMS 7 WARS OF NAPOLEON (UP TO THE TREATY OF TILSIT, 1807) 8 NAPOLEONIC WARS (CONTINUED) 9 THE CONGRESS OF VIENNA (1814-15) 10 THE BREAK-UP OF THE CONCERT OF EUROPE 11 INTERNAL HISTORY OF FRANCE UP TO THE REVOLUTION OF 1830 12 THE REVOLUTION OF 1830 AND ITS R IN EUROPE 13 THE ERA OF METFERNICH 14 LOUIS PHILIPPE 15 THE REVOLUTION OF 1848 AND ITS REACTION IN THE AUSTRIAN EMPIRE AND ITALY 16 THE REVOLUTION OF 1848 AND ITS REACTION IN GERMANY 17 NAPOLEON III 18 THE UNIFICATION OF ITALY 19 THE UNIFICATION OF GERMANY 20 THE EASTERN QUESTION UP TO THE WAR OF GREEK INDEPENDENCE 21 THE EASTERN QUESTION (1832-41) 22 THE EASTERN QUESTION (1853-56) 23 THE EASTERN QUESTION (1856-1914) 24 EUROPEAN EXPANSION ABROAD 25 INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS (1871-1914) 26 THE FIRST WORLD WAR (1914-18) 27 THE PEACE CONFERENCE 28 THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS 29 POST-WAR EUROPE DEMOCRACY AND DICTATORSHIP 30 TOWARDS THE SECOND WORLD WAR 31 EPILOGUE GENEALOGICAL TABLES.
